I have always been under the general philosophy that if you do the jobs that everyone doesn't want to do, it will make you smarter or get you recognized for potential promotion faster. Don't be afraid to jump in and get your hands dirty. In talking with a friend of mine last night who returned home from Iraq, they had a saying that was pretty much inline with my philosophy; "embrace the suck".
I can really see where this is pretty good advice. Yeah, being in Iraq could suck, probably like being in prison, waiting to get done with your tour and going home and hoping to be the same once you get home. When I was in the service of the US Navy we were stuck at sea for months at a time. "Sailors belong on ships and ships belong at sea!" There was nothing to do but count the days and just get by. The decision was how you spent your time.
The mom and I have also developed a new saying taken from those infamous penguins in Madagascar, the movie. "Smile and wave boys, smile and wave." More words of wisdom from the Penguin guys.

Nobody except Skipper knows the penguin credo" - "never swim alone."
- The other penguin credo - "never bathe in hot oil and Bisquick."
- Eggnog at 2100 hours, writing our names in the snow at 2105 ....
- Hoover Dam! We're still in New York! Abort! Dive! Dive! Dive!
- Shiitake Mushrooms!
- You, higher mammal! Can you read?
I am not saying that my life sucks, but there are components of it that are not real fun; dirty diapers, mountains of laundry, dishes, cranky children. I guess you clean it up for the children and say, "when life gives you lemons, make lemonade." You can spend your time complaining about everything or you can just suck it up and get it done and look for the bright spot that will come along next.
